Movie Story

What would you do if you’re trying to survive with no job, no money, no place to stay and the same time you love and you need to take care of your brother who’s mentally challenged and doesn’t realize the situation, How far can you go to make sure you two have a stable life, and will it work, or will your efforts just go in vain?

The movie is form Drama/Crime/Thriller genre, and it narrates the touching story two brothers, one of them is mentally challenged and the other is trying to take good care of him, the only problem is that he’s trying to get the easy route by stealing money and be involved in illegal stuff for easy money, but when his brother is caught in one of the heists, he’s thinking about ways to get him out of it, and it only gets more and more complicated with new people introduced in his life by absolute chance. The first act of the movie is introducing the mentally challenged brother at one of his therapy sessions while the brother come and get him out of it and next their on their way to one of the heists that will end in the mentally challenged brother getting arrested, while the bigger brother is trying to think of ways to get money to bail him out, new complications gets introduced that will totally change the course of actions. The second act is all about the chaos introduced based on the brother’s trial to get his brother out of his situation, but when a couple of wring clicks are done, the situation just keeps on getting more and more complicated. The third act is an absolute chaos that is full of unexpected events, you just see it coming but you never know how or when.

The movie’s pace was really good, except for maybe a part when he’s in the old lady’s apartment that I think dropped the pace for a bit, I think the movie didn’t bore me for a second, it’s so quick, chaotic and dynamic, you feel that you’re watching reality TV and not a movie, it’s executed in a style that draws you in easily especially with the script, you really don’t think this is a written script and it’s true, as most scenes were improvised.

Maybe the only think that I thought would have been good, is giving a bit of a back story for the characters for a quick buildup, it would have helped even more to connect emotionally with the characters.

The movie pace is so fast that you don’t have the chance of character development it’s happening in hours in real time, but you definitely see some emotional distress that is hugely affecting the characters decisions.

I really loved the cinematography of this movie, the way it was shut with incomplete pictures that is mainly focusing on the face expressions and reactions kind of make the whole point of the movie, I also loved the genuine approach that most of the movie is improvised, with filming is real locations just gives a lot of respect to the director and the cinematographer.

The plot is basic and not original however the execution has a lot of uniqueness, it’s simple about two character, one who is mentally-handicapped, the other mentally-unacceptable, and their inability to make a life for themselves with nothing and no-one to help.

I’d have to say the very first scene in this movie where Benny Safdie was being asked by the doctor in his office, very emotional and sets the tone from the very beginning.

I really love Benny Safdie, I think he was brilliant and without him this movie won’t make such an emotional connection, but I got to give it to Pattinson, who’s is just becoming better and better, form Twilight till The lighthouse, he’s just becoming one of my most favorite actors.

I absolutely loved this movie, I’m getting addicted to the Safdie brothers style, I love it when new directors create their own styles when it comes to writing or directing or creating scenes, what you can definitely see in Uncut gems and Good time is a pattern of a quality cinema that intends to immerse the viewer inside their films, you don’t just connect with the characters which happens from the very first scenes in their movies, but the characters and the events pattern just looks so chaotic, random and super realistic in a way that will always shock you, you won’t expect what’s coming.

The characters, the performances, the story, the chaos, the thrilling tension in those scenes will simply make you at the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next, Robert Pattinson and Benny Safdie who’s also the writer and director if this movie are beasts when it comes to acting, their performances are so good that easily connect and get emotional literally form the very first moment in this movie with one of the best introduction scenes in films.

I loved this movie, I loved what they did with it, I’d watch it again and I’d definitely recommend it.

I recommend this movie for those who do like drama that are so quick, random and realistic, also those who love independent movies will definitely love this very low budget movie that you just get a lot of entertainment out if it.

8/10, I loved this movie, my favorite genre is independent movies in general, and I really love it when a movie is costing so little yet producing so much quality, This movie with such great actors, script, music, directing and else did cost under 5 Million dollars, yet you see movies with a budget of hundreds of millions flopping and getting their chance just because the name of the director or the actor. I think movies like this one should get more exposure and definitely a wider release. I loved every moment of this breath holding thriller drama movie, I’d love to watch it again but more important I’d love to watch more like it in the future, Thank you A24 for this Gem.
